In Tigray, the past conflict had resulted in reduced access to health facilities, reduced ability to pay for medicine, and disrupted supply chain system for essential medical supplies. In order to overcome these challenges, Doctors with Africa CUAMM, with support and funding from Caritas Switzerland, started the implementation of the project “Humanitarian health response to conflict affected communities in East Tigray” including the donation of essential medicine and medical supplies that enable to minimize the shortage that affect the regional health system. In addition, this initiative allows to improve access to health facility along with the quality of healthcare services aiming to reduce child and maternal mortality.
CUAMM organized an event at don Bosco compound in Mekelle on the occasion of the delivery of drugs and medical supplies donated to two specific health facilities: Adigrat General Hospital and Sanit Mary Health Centre. In particular, the items donated included blood cell counter machines (CBC), delivery coachs, patients’ beds, glucometer machines with strip, laboratory items and reagents, and essential drugs for the hospital and health center.
“I express my gratitude for this donation, highlighting also the valuable support that CUAMM has provided to health services for the catchment area population including to internally displaced people in the region”, affirmed Dr. Tewodrose, the delegated representative of the Regional Health Bureau.
Several representatives participated to the handover event, among others Mr. Mahari, the coordinator of the health cluster for the Tigray region, Mr. Asegedom, the filed coordinator of Caritas Switzerland, Sr. Mana, the head of Saint Mary Health Centre, and Dr. Haftom, the CEO delegate of Adigrat General Hospital.
All the items were distributed to the health facilities according to their specific needs, ensuring that the equipment and supplies will be used where they are needed most. The support of Caritas Switzerland, together with the strong collaboration with government authorities, partners and local community is really fundamental to ensure the continuity of CUAMM’s dedicated commitment to improving the health and well-being of the people of Tigray.
