On the 5th May, Doctors with Africa CUAMM is happy to celebrate the International Day of the Midwife. Midwives play a vital role for the health system and for their community. Not only they ensure women and their newborns safe pregnancy and childbirth, but also they provide respectful and well-resourced maternity care that can create a lifetime of good health and wellbeing beyond the childbirth continuum. CUAMM strongly believes in the importance of midwifes, therefore it is supporting Nursing and Midwifery Schools in Ethiopia, Uganda and South Sudan. Today, 59 students have graduated and 136 are enrolled in midwifery training. The path to become a midwife in Sub-Saharan countries can be challenging, with many obstacles to overcome, as testified by Suzan, therefore CUAMM will continue to support Midwifery schools and their students.
“I’m Suzan Auba, a registered midwife at Lui Hospital, proud to be working as a midwife. I joined midwifery school in June 2014 with CUAMM assistance. It was not easy for me to start my carrier as a midwife since I had made several attempts of joining the training institutions but never succeeded. Finally God helped me see my dream drawn in to a reality: when ministry of health advertised, I prayed hard and went for the interviews. Competition was really tight because 500 people were short listed for the interviews and I was among the few who went through. Despite having tried several times and never succeeded and despite the political instabilities, I never gave up on chasing my dream as a midwife.
Throughout my period of studies, I encountered a lot of challenges, like putting together what was taught in class, analysing it and relate it to the real practise. It was really not easy until after some good period of having hands on experience. In addition to the course being tough, the war that broke up in the Greater Mundri that never allowed us to settle at school and have maximum concentration made me one time think that maybe it wasn’t my calling. Despite of all, I went through my period of training. I’m so grateful that CUAMM made it possible for me to achieve my heart desire, because each time the war broke up emergency evacuation was pushed through and relocation of the school was done.
Currently I’m working as a registered midwife in Lui Hospital providing essential care to the pregnant mothers, ensuring clean and safe delivery thus reducing maternal mortality and morbidities. The supervisor adds that Suzan is a jolly midwife proud of her profession, and we are happy with her work”.
