The Italian Ambasaddor in Dar es Salaam – Marco Lombardi, the Minister of Health Nassor Ahmed Mazrui together with others representatives have gathered at Kivunge Hospital, in Zanzibar for the handover of medical equipment donated by CUAMM in the framework of “IMaNHC – Improving Maternal and Neonatal Care” project funded by The Italian Agency for Development Cooperation. The intervention, launched in July 2023 and carried out by Doctors with Africa CUAMM in partnership with other organizations namely CMSR and COPE, aims at improving the quality of maternal and neonatal healthcare services therefore achieving the final goal of universal health coverage by the strengthening of health workers’ capacities and the provision of medical supplies and equipment
The project targets both the district of Zanzibar, precisely Kivunge and Mpendae hospitals plus three health centres namely Mwembeladu, Sebleni and Mwera and Dodoma where St. Gemma, Makole, Mkonze, Hombolo health centres are located.
«Maternal and neonatal mortality rate is a real issue in Zanzibar. Together with partners and through the training of healthcare workforce and the donation of medial equipment, the government is working towards the reduction of maternal mortality rate – said the Ministry of Health in Zanzibar. The project reflects both principles and objectives set by the the national Health Sector Strategic Plan July 2021 – June 2026 (HSSPV) which main goal is to make health services available to all therefore promote the social and economic prosperity fostering inclusion and equity as defined by the Agenda 2030 with the motto “Leave no one behind”.
In order to achieve the goal, it is necessary to address the major constraints represented by both the lack of drugs, consumables and medical supplies and the limited access to educational opportunities on obstetric emergencies and neonatal resuscitation for heealthcare workers. “On the job mentorship” is the training organized by CUAMM in collaboration with the Ministry of Health in Zanzibar. Health workers from 5 health facilities benefited from the training on postpartum hemorrhage diagnosis and treatment (PPH) that aims at ensuring mother and children’ health therefore reduce PPH-related deaths. A collaboration that is expected to go forward and bear fruits for the well-being of mothers and children.
