On 19 February 2016 in Padua, Italy, the spotlight will be on the topic of quality assurance in the delivery room, with talks by renowned medical professionals from the fields of maternal and infant health care and national, regional and local health care management. This is when “Quality indicators in the delivery room”, a conference organized by Dr. Maria Teresa Gervasi (Director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Unit, Azienda Ospedaliera di Padova), will be held, with Dr. Michael Robson of the National Maternity Hospital in Dublin, Ireland, as its guest of honor.
Robson is the creator of the Ten-Group Classification System (TGCS), a method for analyzing the use of Cesarean sections in hospitals based on objective criteria, and one that the World Health Organization has proposed adopting as an internationally applicable Caesarean section classification system. The overuse of C-sections has indeed become a pressing public health problem, with the surgical procedure now widespread in both high-income countries and low- and middle-income ones.
In Padua Robson will discuss quality standards in maternal and infant health care with a panel of experts in the field, including CUAMM’s own Dr. Giovanni Putoto. In 2014, in fact, Doctors with Africa CUAMM launched two pilot studies in its hospitals in Ethiopia and Tanzania to assess the benefits and risks of Cesarean sections; both used Robson’s classification system.
