In Ivory Coast, maternal and neonatal mortality indicators remain a serious concern. Maternal mortality stands at 480 per 100,000 live births. Millions of newborns die within the first month of life—half of them on the very first day.
The main causes are prematurity (30.1%), birth asphyxia (27.6%), and infections (20%). This is a dramatic situation that requires urgent support and action.
In line with Ivory Coast’s national priorities, we work to promote more equitable access to quality healthcare services for the most vulnerable communities.
We provide technical support to 71 faith-based health centres within the URSSCI network. For 20 of these centres, in collaboration with the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome and the University of Padua, we focus on:
- Strengthening clinical and managerial skills
- Promoting coordination and integration with the national health system
- Supplying medical equipment
- Improving infrastructure and developing referral systems
In Ivory Coast, we are engaged in a network-based approach to provide appropriate responses to the needs of the population.
-
We have provided equipment for oxygen therapy and suction, masks and ventilation devices, as well as diagnostic and monitoring tools.
-
Training local staff and supporting them in the development of professionalism and skills is a priority.
To ensure the effective integration of faith-based health centres into the national health system, it is essential to guarantee technical and structural standards that are often lacking in Ivory Coast.
As CUAMM, we work to bridge these gaps and extend access to care as widely as possible. This requires sustained commitment, expertise, and resources.
