Ending Gender-Based Violence in Cabo Delgado

Africa, Mozambique
In emergencies Training in Africa For mothers and children
For over seven years, the province of Cabo Delgado in northern Mozambique has been affected by a violent conflict that has displaced more than 800,000 people internally. In this context of extreme insecurity, women and girls are among the most vulnerable: gender-based violence (GBV) has become one of the most urgent protection crises. The combination of conflict-related trauma, poverty, and social displacement fuels a cycle of physical and psychological abuse that often remains invisible due to stigma and shame. This is a human rights violation that requires an urgent, coordinated, and long-term response.
We are present in Cabo Delgado to ensure that no woman has to face the trauma of violence alone. Our work, which began several years ago in the districts of Pemba and Montepuez, continues today through an integrated approach focused on protecting survivors and preventing violence within communities.

Combating gender-based violence in Cabo Delgado

  • For mothers and children
We manage and support “safe spaces” (casas de proteção) where women can find refuge, receive psychosocial support, and take part in group activities to overcome social isolation.
  • In emergencies
We provide clinical assistance, specialised psychological support, and legal guidance, accompanying survivors throughout the complex process from reporting to court proceedings.
  • Training in Africa
We train local authorities, healthcare workers, and teachers to improve case management and early identification of trauma, particularly among minors.
Continuity of this intervention is essential to ensure that protection pathways already in place are not interrupted. It is necessary to continue investing in the strengthening of health and social services, ensuring survivors have free access to medicines, hygiene kits, and transport to reach care centres. Supporting this work means sustaining a coordinated system capable of responding to immediate needs while also creating real opportunities for future generations, so that violence is no longer the only reality possible.
