Supporting migrants and asylum seekers in Italy

CUAMM’s commitment to ensure reception and assistance services for migrants.
Italy

Following the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, the work of the Immigration Desk in Padua became more complex. At the beginning of 2022, the number of refugees arriving in the city more than doubled, reaching around 400 daily access requests. Most were Ukrainians seeking assistance to regularize their legal status in Italy. “First with the pandemic and then with the war in Ukraine, as Doctors with Africa CUAMM we felt called to practice a form of ‘close solidarity’. Our heart and the core of our commitment are, and remain, in Africa — a continent where enormous needs and daily challenges are concentrated, to restore dignity and provide care to the most vulnerable among the vulnerable.” — father Dante Carraro, CUAMM Director General.

CUAMM's work in immigration offices began in Padua in 2022 to ease and accelerate the workload caused by the crisis in Eastern Europe. Today, the commitment goes on and has been extended to the cities of Bologna and Treviso where volunteers dedicate their time to supporting and welcoming people in need. In Padua, Bologna and Treviso they manage the reception phase, assist at the information desk, guide and direct users to ensure faster and smoother access to procedures.
