In the Ngunenyyiel Refugee Camp, Ethiopia

Ethiopia, Africa
In emergencies For mothers and children
There are over 1.1 million refugees in Ethiopia. In the Gambella region, with a host population of 525,000 people, as many as 440,000 refugees have been received. Bordering South Sudan, Gambella is one of the main entry points for people fleeing conflict. Unfortunately, worsening instability along the border has also forced members of host communities to flee, with more than 15,000 internally displaced people. In the Ngunenyyiel refugee camp, the situation is critical and humanitarian needs are extreme.
Opened in 2016, the Ngunenyyiel refugee camp hosts over 110,000 refugees. As CUAMM, we are responsible for managing one health center and two health posts, and we have contributed to the rehabilitation of the Tierkidi Health Center. All health facilities are severely overcrowded and inadequate to meet the needs of thousands of people requiring humanitarian assistance. There are major gaps in basic healthcare services, with food insecurity, interruption of vaccination activities, and extremely poor hygiene conditions. These challenges are further compounded by overcrowded shelters and incidents of gender-based violence.

At Ngunenyyiel, we work to provide assistance to refugees.

  • In emergencies
We have launched a project to rehabilitate health posts and health centers so they can better respond to the refugees’ healthcare needs.
  • For mothers and children
We support the operational, administrative, and coordination costs of local health workers, enabling them to have the tools and resources needed to provide care.
Funding is needed for the structural rehabilitation of health centers and posts, as well as to ensure the supply of medicines, medical consumables, and financial support for local healthcare workers.
