Burkina Faso

In 2025, Doctors with Africa CUAMM began the process of returning to Burkina Faso, marking a new chapter following its first historic intervention in the 1980s. The country is experiencing a period of severe geopolitical instability, which is also affecting key health indicators.

In the context

01.
Burkina Faso continues to face very high levels of maternal, neonatal and child mortality. Life expectancy is 59 years for men and 64 years for women, while the maternal mortality ratio stands at 241.8 deaths per 100,000 live births. Poverty, communicable diseases and the provision of care for people with disabilities pose further challenges to the healthcare system.

CUAMM’s return to Burkina Faso

In 2025, CUAMM began a phase of exploration and in-depth understanding of the local context, meeting with local authorities and laying the foundations for an established presence in the country. This process marks CUAMM’s return to Burkina Faso following its first intervention in the 1980s.

Prevention, diagnosis and care

The 36-month initiative will be based primarily at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Bogodogo, a facility serving approximately 500,000 people in the capital, Ouagadougou. The intervention will focus on the prevention and treatment of viral hepatitis B and C, which affect 10% and 3% of the population respectively.

The strategy aims first and foremost to strengthen screening capacity among the groups most at risk, including pregnant women, mothers of paediatric patients and surgical patients. The intervention will involve the adoption of clinical guidelines, specialist training for healthcare staff and the strengthening of counselling services.

Diagnosis, training and patient support

Diagnostic capacity will be strengthened through the provision of reagents and advanced equipment, using a gradual approach designed to ensure the facility’s long-term sustainability. Since barriers to accessing healthcare are not only financial, the intervention will also include psychological support and awareness-raising programmes to address the social stigma that still affects people who test positive.
