Leer, reconstructing a hospital

Located in Unity State, Leer Hospital served around 130,000 people before the outbreak of civil war in 2013. The prolonged conflict left the facility severely damaged, with several buildings destroyed. Today, services are limited to basic outpatient care, while more complex cases must be referred to Juba, nearly 600 km away.

At the beginning of 2025, when we arrived, the hospital was heavily damaged and struggling to provide even basic services. Our commitment now is to rehabilitate it, in close coordination with local authorities, so it can return to full functionality.

Planned interventions include the restoration of the emergency department, pharmacy, maternity ward and paediatric unit. In addition, we aim to set up a 12-bed waiting area for women approaching delivery, as well as a small neonatal unit with 4 beds and 4 cribs for newborns.

All departments will be equipped with water and electricity, ensured through a generator and solar power systems.

Rehabilitating a hospital requires significant resources and sustained effort: construction materials, medical equipment and essential supplies are all needed to restore services and ensure quality care. Skilled engineers and workers are crucial to carry out the reconstruction, alongside the procurement of medicines and consumables necessary for daily clinical activities.

The reconstruction of the hospital is a vital step toward rebuilding access to healthcare and providing concrete, life-saving services to the community.
