Training Nurses and Midwives in Wolisso: A Resource for the Whole Country

Africa, Ethiopia
Training in Africa For mothers and children
Despite sustained economic growth, rising poverty in recent years, inflation exceeding 20%, internal instability and conflict, and migration flows from neighboring countries make Ethiopia one of the most fragile countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Doctors with Africa CUAMM, present in the country since 1980, has been working for over 25 years in Wolisso, Oromia Region both at the hospital and at the nursing and midwifery school where key professionals are trained to ensure access to basic healthcare for the population.
With its 163 beds, the St. Luke Hospital in Wolisso is a referral center for the entire Oromia Region, serving over 1.2 million people. It includes an emergency department, medical and surgical wards, and a maternity unit, with more than 3,000 deliveries each year. CUAMM’s work focuses not only on hospital care but also on community-based interventions, including maternal and newborn health services, prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, malnutrition screening, and outreach activities, as well as the training of new nurses and midwives.

At Wolisso, we are committed to training competent and motivated professionals who can provide healthcare responses to the needs of the population.

  • Training in Africa
In Wolisso, we are committed to developing skilled and motivated professionals capable of responding to the population’s healthcare needs. Each year, the school trains around 30 new students, supported in part by CUAMM scholarships. To date, 906 professionals have graduated.
  • For mothers and children
This initiative contributes to improving both the quality and quantity of human resources in a country where the number of healthcare professionals remains insufficient to meet the population’s needs.
To ensure training opportunities for young Ethiopians, it is essential to provide scholarships covering tuition, educational materials, and accommodation and meals at the Santa Marta hostel within the hospital. In addition, CUAMM supports students’ learning through practical clinical training at the hospital.
